It is now effective, with the latest update powered on September 27 th, Navionics Boating app becomes Garmin Boating. The Navionics® brand is now only about charting, but for how long ? However, it would seem risky to delete such a well-known trademark ! And as users have been able to see : A new logo has been imposed to clearly identify the owner of the application.
With this update, the charting gains a new option to display the nature of the seabed with an adapted color palette and additional details. In addition to satellite imagery and shaded relief, colorization of bathymetry is intended to provide better identification of soundings. This is in line with the display functions already present in TZ iBoat for a year.
However, all of these display functions that are complementary to basic nautical charting can only be accessed via an Internet connection. Only nautical charts can be downloaded for offline use. But as this application has always targeted boaters practicing coastal navigation, mainly powerboating (¹), this has little impact. The widespread use of 4G/5G cellular networks, and soon 6G, Allows access to the Internet almost anywhere along the coast up to five nautical miles, sometimes more.
